Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether or not to buy a used motorcycle. With vehicles sometimes there’s a Carfax, but not so much with bikes. Every once in a while someone punches in motorcycle VIN numbers and pulls up results, but Carfax says their database isn’t really made for doing research on used motorcycles. Their database is for cars and light trucks, and they don’t have access to all the records that would be necessary to give a complete history on a used motorcycle.

That used motorcycle for sale on the side of the road or listed on Craigslist might be a good value, or it might not. It might have been someone’s well cared for baby, or it could have been abused and neglected, it could even be stolen.

Certified Pre-Owned for New Riders

H-D® released the Certified Pre-Owned program in part because the Coronavirus pandemic made people sick of staying home at the same time it caused supply chain problems and income irregularities. People were ready to try new things, to get out and experience adventure in ways that didn’t expose them to potential infection, and to add skills that gave them a positive mood boost. Motorcycle sales skyrocketed.

But many new riders were new to everything about riding. As with any new skill, there’s a learning curve. Used motorcycles are in many cases more affordable than new ones, but they’re still not cheap.

Certified Pre-Owned Harleys® help new riders because they are guaranteed to meet a certain standard. They’re all five years old or newer. They can’t have more than 25,000 miles (and most have much, much fewer) and must have documented evidence they’ve received all scheduled maintenance at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals. They also must pass a 110-point inspection given by factory-trained H-D® technicians.
